Getting Around...

Transportation

As a suburb just outside of Providence, Johnston is very easy to travel around. Two major highways run (and connect) through the middle of town —  I-295 and Route 6. These highways make all four corners of Johnston readily accessible, cuts down on travel time to Providence and T.F. Green, and makes it easy to get almost anywhere in western RI without much hassle.

Route 5: runs north to south in Johnston and crosses several main intersections, including Route 44, Route 6A, and Route 14 before leading into Cranston, RI.

I-295: travels north to south through Johnston with major exits at the Route 6 and 6A Junctions, Route 44 in Smithfield, and Route 14 in Cranston.

Route 6 & 6A: known locally as the “Route 6 connector”, this expressway travels east to west from I-295 to I-95 in Providence. Route 6A is an alternative route which leads from the Olneyville neighborhood of Providence into Johnston, then turns into Route 6 before continuing westward towards Connecticut.
